While “hot” process systems come and go, it is important to glean the “goodies” from these systems. Therefore we will be updating this menu selection with information and links to various organizations and information points on the web which are dedicated to the concept. So let’s begin with Lean Thinking and its derivative – Lean Manufacturing.
Lean Manufacturing
Lean manufacturing is the new “ballyhooed” manufacturing process that has taken the stage in recent years. The concept was derived from the book “The Machine That Changed the World” by James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones.
They followed that up with another book “Lean Thinking; Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation” which has been used as the standard read when considering moving into the world of Lean.

As defined by Womack and Jones “Lean is a way to specify value, line up value-creating actions in the best sequence, conduct the activities without interruption whenever someone requests them, and perform them more and more effectively”.
Basically, what they are saying is what we at Thomas & Associates Consulting strive for with our clients – to do more with less effort, time, and money.
Think of it – continuous flow of materials and processes to produce or distribute products. How wonderful would that be? In the real world it’s not possible. However, with lots of work and constant attention to “the process”, you can get close.
We are, after all, humans and we are not perfect, but we can strive.

Useful Organizations
As noted previously, we also find certain organizations to be great tools from which to gain information and education. One of the oldest and consist is APICS.
It used to be called The American Production and Inventory Control Society, but in recent years updated its image to reflect a changing, and challenging global market.
Our President – Deb Thomas – was President of her local chapter many years ago and still retains her membership. It is a solid resource for information and growth.
